Managing different personalities through change

Jul 09, 2021

Every office has a melting pot of personalities - the restless, the avoider, the victim. How you

manage change as one of those personalities and how you support a team with one (or many) of those personalities needs to be carefully thought through.

There are a number of types of personalities in every team - and managing each one is different. This article will discuss how to manage change as one of the types of "different" personalities in your office, particularly the passive-aggressive personality and the risk-taker. The latter is more likely to be first in line to make a big change or take on an unpopular task, but they are also passive in being able to see how things work before deciding. The former - especially the other type - can be frustratingly slow, but will support their team mates when necessary. It's important to be clear on the problems that these personalities will create, particularly when you're trying to make change happen.

Let's start with what should, and shouldn't be the name of this article: "Managing Change". No one ever struggles or fights with the change inflicted on them. It is a natural state - we can't live without it any longer than we have to. We are not always comfortable with it either, but most of us don't want to see any aspect of our lives go backwards.

The struggle is around managing change and what aspects of a specific person or team should/can be changed in order to manage their personality and allow them to participate in the change process effectively.

It sounds manipulative understanding and adjusting these behavioural insights have a powerful impact on how successful your change is.
